Orlando Pirates winger Mohau Nkota is expected to return to competitive football in the coming weeks after completing a season-long loan move back from Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq, although he will first need to rebuild his fitness following a knee injury.
The 21-year-old has officially rejoined Orlando Pirates for the 2026/27 season, with both clubs confirming the agreement on Thursday. The deal brings Nkota back to the club where he made his breakthrough before moving to Saudi Arabia in July 2025.
There is currently no confirmed date for his first appearance, but his rehabilitation is understood to be progressing well. The immediate priority will be restoring his physical condition after a significant period on the sidelines rather than rushing him into competitive action.
Sources indicate that Nkota has made encouraging progress in his recovery and has recently been able to train without a leg brace. That development is regarded as an important step, although he is still expected to require several weeks of conditioning before he is ready to play.
A gradual return is likely as Pirates manage the winger’s workload and allow him to regain the fitness levels required for first-team football. If he continues to recover without further setbacks, supporters may not have to wait too long to see him back on the pitch.
Nkota sustained the knee injury towards the end of last season during his time with Al-Ettifaq. The setback limited his involvement in Saudi Arabia and contributed to his omission from the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His first campaign at Al-Ettifaq had begun positively after his move from Pirates. Nkota scored on his debut and found the net three times in his opening four appearances, but his progress was later interrupted by the injury and the demands of adapting to a new league.
The return to Orlando Pirates gives the young winger an opportunity to rebuild his momentum in familiar surroundings. He emerged at the Buccaneers before making the move to Saudi Arabia, and his rehabilitation will now continue with the club that helped establish him at senior level.
For Pirates, Nkota’s eventual return could provide another attacking option once he is fully fit. However, there is no suggestion that he will be available immediately, with his recovery and preparation expected to determine when he can resume competitive football.
The club have yet to announce a specific comeback date. For now, Nkota’s progress without the leg brace offers a positive indication, while the next stage of his programme will focus on improving his fitness and gradually preparing him for a return to action.
