Mosimane faces key striker decisions ahead of Bafana Bafana qualifiers

Pitso Mosimane is expected to name his first Bafana Bafana squad in the coming days, with the striking options likely to attract significant attention before the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea.

The new head coach will have to assess a forward line affected by injuries, a recent transfer and inconsistent form. Three of the strikers selected for South Africa’s FIFA World Cup squad are currently facing different circumstances, increasing the possibility that Mosimane will broaden his options in attack.

Orlando Pirates forward Evidence Makgopa is recovering from injury and has been unavailable. Lyle Foster, meanwhile, has moved to Major League Soccer after joining Houston Dynamo on loan from Burnley. He is not expected to be included for the forthcoming qualifiers.

Iqraam Rayners remains another possibility despite a difficult start to the season. The Mamelodi Sundowns forward scored his first goal of the campaign on Wednesday, helping his side to a 2-0 victory over Milford FC.

That goal could provide a timely boost for Rayners, who has struggled in front of goal in recent weeks. His experience is still considered valuable, however, and he remains an option for Mosimane as South Africa prepare for their qualifying campaign.

Younger forwards pushing for recognition

Rayners’ Mamelodi Sundowns team-mate Cassius Mailula has made a strong start since returning to Chloorkop. The young forward has scored four goals for the club and could come into consideration if Mosimane decides to introduce fresh attacking options.

At Orlando Pirates, Boitumelo Radiopane is gradually finding his rhythm. He has scored twice for the Buccaneers and also supplied one assist, giving Mosimane another emerging player to monitor.

Radiopane’s team-mate Yanela Mbuthuma also opened his account for the season earlier this week, scoring twice against Kruger United. His brace has strengthened his claims for attention as the national coach weighs up the available alternatives.

There is also a potential option playing outside a conventional striking role. Puso Dithejane has been enjoying a productive spell in Major League Soccer and has found some scoring form.

The former TS Galaxy player is not usually deployed as a striker, but Mosimane could consider calling him up because of his ability to contribute goals and assists.

With key players unavailable and others seeking consistency, Mosimane’s first Bafana Bafana selection is expected to reveal whether he will rely on familiar names or use the upcoming qualifiers to expand South Africa’s attacking pool.
