Chelsea identify Georginio Wijnaldum as experienced midfield solution

Chelsea have contacted Georginio Wijnaldum as they continue to look for midfield reinforcements after being unable to complete the signing of Lamine Camara from AS Monaco.

The transfer window has closed, but Chelsea are still exploring their options. The London club had been pursuing Camara before a late change of position from AS Monaco prevented the deal from being finalised. They have now turned their attention to Wijnaldum, who is available without a transfer fee.

According to Foot Mercato, Chelsea have made contact with the 35-year-old Netherlands international. Wijnaldum has been without a club since leaving Al-Ettifaq, meaning he could join the Blues as a free agent despite the closure of the transfer market.

Chelsea are understood to be considering the midfielder as a short-term option to address their requirements in the centre of the pitch. His availability and experience could make him an attractive solution for the London club as they assess ways to strengthen their squad.

Wijnaldum has extensive knowledge of English football, having previously played for both Newcastle and Liverpool. His time in the Premier League was followed by a spell with Paris Saint-Germain before he continued his career in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq.

His most recent statistics may also help explain Chelsea’s interest. During the previous season, Wijnaldum produced 17 goals and seven assists in 34 appearances for Al-Ettifaq, making it a particularly productive campaign for the midfielder.

The proposed move would therefore give Chelsea an experienced player who is already familiar with English football and could be recruited without a transfer payment. The club’s interest follows the collapse of its attempt to bring in Camara, with AS Monaco’s reversal forcing Chelsea to consider an alternative for the midfield.

Wijnaldum’s next destination remains undecided, but Chelsea have now emerged as a possible option after making contact with the former Newcastle, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain player. Their preference is reportedly for a brief arrangement that would allow him to help cover the club’s midfield needs.
