Chelsea to add Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor after £40m agreement

Chelsea have agreed a £40m deal to sign Italy international defender Honest Ahanor from Atalanta, with the 18-year-old scheduled to officially join the club in June 2027.

The agreement was reported by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, who confirmed the move on social media. Ahanor’s arrival will give Chelsea a long-term addition at the back after the defender’s rapid rise in Italian football.

Romano wrote on X: “Chelsea sign Honest Ahanor officially from Atalanta in a £40m deal starting in June 2027.”

He added: “The 18-year-old Italian defender will now join Crystal Palace on loan from Atalanta.”

The details mean Ahanor is expected to continue his development away from Chelsea before becoming part of the club’s squad in 2027. The agreement is therefore structured around a future move rather than an immediate switch to Stamford Bridge.

Ahanor made 35 appearances for Atalanta last season, his first campaign with the club after moving from Genoa in July 2025. His performances in Bergamo helped establish him as one of the country’s emerging defensive talents.

That form also earned him recognition at international level. Ahanor was called up to the Italy senior squad and made his first two appearances for the national team in June.

The defender’s progress at Atalanta has now led to a significant investment from Chelsea, with the Premier League club committing £40m to secure his future. The transfer agreement was described as official and exclusive by Romano.

Ahanor joined Atalanta after beginning his career with Genoa, and he quickly became an important part of the side during his first season in Bergamo. His 35 appearances represented a substantial role for a player aged 18, while his subsequent Italy debut underlined the speed of his development.

Chelsea’s agreement will see the club retain an interest in his long-term progress before his formal arrival in 2027. In the meantime, the reported loan arrangement involving Crystal Palace and Atalanta will form part of the next stage of his career.

Ahanor’s move is another major step for a player who has progressed from Genoa to Atalanta, then into the Italy senior set-up, in a short period. His first two international appearances came in June after his breakthrough season with Atalanta.

The £40m agreement represents the main terms of the deal, while the official Chelsea move is set to begin in June 2027.
