Chelsea secure Honest Ahanor deal but Atalanta stay extended until 2027

Chelsea have secured the signing of 18-year-old defender Honest Ahanor from Atalanta, although the player will remain with the Italian club until the middle of 2027.

The move means Ahanor’s switch to Chelsea will not take place immediately. Instead, the defender will spend one more season with Atalanta before joining the Blues’ squad in England.

Ahanor has emerged as a promising young player after making 35 appearances during his first season with Atalanta. That campaign followed his move to the Bergamo club from Genoa, where he had recently made his Serie A debut.

The agreement allows Ahanor to continue his development in Italy before taking the next step in his career with Chelsea. The defender, who is of Nigerian origin, has already established himself at senior level despite being only 18.

Ahanor is described as an Italian central defender and will gain another season of experience in Serie A before becoming part of Chelsea’s first-team group. His continued involvement with Atalanta will give him further exposure to the Italian top flight ahead of his eventual arrival at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea already have a sizeable group of central defenders available. Their options include Maxence Lacroix, Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Josh Acheampong, Tosin Adarabioyo, Aaron Anselmino and Jorrel Hato.

The addition of Ahanor therefore represents a move for the future rather than an immediate reinforcement. His delayed arrival means Chelsea will have time to plan for his integration while he completes another season with Atalanta.

Atalanta signed Ahanor only a year ago from Genoa, following his first appearances in Serie A. His 35-match campaign in Bergamo has now led to a further move, with Chelsea confirming that his longer-term future lies in west London.

For the moment, Ahanor’s next competitive season will continue in Italy. He will remain with Atalanta for an additional year before transferring to Chelsea in mid-2027, when he is expected to join a defensive department that already includes several established and developing players.

The deal confirms Chelsea’s interest in adding a young defender to their future plans, while also allowing Ahanor to continue building his experience in Serie A before making the move to the Premier League.
