Chelsea sign Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor with first-team move set for 2027

Chelsea have announced the signing of Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor, with the Italian youngster expected to join their first team in 2027 rather than during the current summer transfer window.

Chelsea confirmed that Ahanor will not immediately become part of the senior squad at Stamford Bridge. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the 18-year-old will spend the current season on loan at Crystal Palace before returning to Chelsea next season.

The arrangement means Ahanor’s move to Chelsea has been agreed, but his arrival in the club’s first team will come at a later stage. Chelsea have indicated that 2027 is the year in which the defender will link up with their senior side.

Ahanor began his football education in the academy at Genoa and made his first-team debut for the club in 2024. At the start of last season, he moved to Atalanta, where he became a regular member of the senior squad.

He made 35 appearances for Atalanta during the previous campaign and scored once. His performances led to recognition at international level, with Ahanor receiving his first call-up to the Italy senior team during the international break in June.

The defender featured in two friendly matches for Italy during that period, facing Luxembourg and Greece. Those appearances followed his breakthrough season with Atalanta, where he established himself in first-team football at the age of 18.

Chelsea’s announcement therefore represents the latest step in a rapid rise for Ahanor, who progressed from Genoa’s academy to senior football before securing a move to Atalanta and making his international debut.

For the current season, however, his immediate football will come at Crystal Palace. He is due to spend the campaign on loan there, with a return to Chelsea scheduled for next season before his planned first-team integration in 2027.

Ahanor’s development has taken place over a short period. After beginning his career with Genoa, he moved into Atalanta’s first-team set-up at the beginning of last season and went on to play 35 times for the club. His form was enough to earn him a place in Italy’s senior squad for the June friendlies.

Chelsea have now secured his services, while the loan move to Crystal Palace will provide the next stage of his career before he joins the Chelsea first team in 2027.
