Aston Villa secure record-setting move for Paris Saint-Germain academy graduate Ibrahim Mbaye

Aston Villa have officially signed Senegalese forward Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth €55m, with the 18-year-old beginning a new chapter in the Premier League.

The transfer had been moving towards completion in recent days after Villa and Paris Saint-Germain reached an agreement over the young striker’s move. Mbaye then travelled to England to undergo a medical and complete the formalities of his contract with the Birmingham club.

His arrival brings an end to a short but highly decorated spell with Paris Saint-Germain, where he joined the academy at the age of 10. Mbaye progressed through the club’s youth system before making his professional debut for the first team in August 2024.

At 16 years, six months and 23 days old, he became the youngest player to start a match for Paris Saint-Germain. His rapid rise established him as one of the most notable prospects to emerge from the club’s academy in recent years.

Mbaye made 42 appearances during his time with Paris Saint-Germain, scoring four goals and creating 45 more, according to official club data. He also collected several major honours, including two Champions League titles.

The Senegal forward’s decision to leave Paris followed a decline in his chances of receiving regular first-team minutes. Despite having a contract with the French club until 2028, Mbaye had not played a single minute for the side since the beginning of the current season.

His move to Aston Villa is therefore intended to provide him with a fresh opportunity to establish himself at senior level in English football. The transfer also carries particular significance for Paris Saint-Germain because of Mbaye’s status as one of the academy’s leading graduates.

Reports indicate that the deal could become the largest sale involving a player developed at Paris Saint-Germain’s training centre. If confirmed, it would surpass the previous record associated with former club defender Mamadou Sakho.

Villa’s €55m investment represents a major commitment to a player who has made only a relatively small number of senior appearances, but Mbaye’s early breakthrough in Paris and his collection of major honours made him one of the most sought-after young players produced by the club.

The move also marks an important stage in the teenager’s development. Having progressed from the Paris Saint-Germain academy to becoming the youngest player to start for the first team, Mbaye will now continue his career in the Premier League with Aston Villa.
