Tapelo Xoki included in Orlando Pirates squad for Kruger United clash

Experienced defender Tapelo Xoki has moved closer to a return to competitive football after being named in Orlando Pirates’ travelling squad for Tuesday night’s Betway Premiership match against Kruger United.

The Buccaneers published video footage of their journey to Mbombela Stadium on the club’s official X account, with Xoki visible among the players making the trip.

His inclusion is the first significant indication for some time that the centre-back could be considered for selection again. It may give new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou another experienced defensive option as Pirates prepare to face the newly promoted side.

Xoki has spent a difficult period on the sidelines, but has continued working towards a return to the first-team group. His presence in the travelling party suggests he may now be edging back into Ouaddou’s plans, although it remains uncertain whether he will play any part in Tuesday’s fixture.

The timing of his return to contention could prove important for Pirates because of concerns in central defence. Lebone Seema is doubtful after suffering an injury during the weekend’s MTN8 semi-final second leg against Sekhukhune United at the Orlando Amstel Arena.

Pirates won that match 3-0 to complete a 4-0 aggregate victory and secure their place in the final. However, Seema was unable to finish the game and was replaced by Mpho Chabatsane, who went on to partner Sbangani Zulu in the centre of defence.

Captain Nkosinathi Sibisi was already unavailable for the semi-final as he continues his recovery from injury. With Sibisi still out and Seema facing a race to be fit, Xoki’s return to the squad could offer Ouaddou valuable cover and experience.

The defender was previously associated with AmaZulu and has been attempting to force his way back into the Pirates team. During the club’s pre-season preparations, people close to Xoki remained confident that he retained both the ability and the mentality required to compete for his place again.

Being included in the travelling squad represents a positive step, even if it does not guarantee an appearance at Mbombela Stadium. Xoki could now have the opportunity to demonstrate that he remains capable of contributing to the Buccaneers’ campaign.

Pirates will assess their defensive options before facing Kruger United, while Xoki will hope his return to the matchday group marks the beginning of a sustained comeback under Ouaddou.
