Barcelona’s Hamza Abdelkarim earns La Liga debut after Hansi Flick backing

Hamza Abdelkarim made his official Barcelona first-team debut by coming on in the closing stages of the 3-0 La Liga victory over Rayo Vallecano.

The 18-year-old forward replaced Raphinha during the third-round fixture at Spotify Camp Nou, with the Brazilian receiving a warm reception from the home supporters as he left the pitch.

Abdelkarim entered the game wearing Barcelona’s number 29 shirt and played the final five minutes, marking the latest step in a rapid rise through the club’s ranks. His debut came just hours before Barcelona announced the signing of Gabriel Jesus.

The Egypt international had already impressed during pre-season with the senior squad. He finished the preparations as Barcelona’s leading scorer, having scored four goals, with his final strike coming at Camp Nou in the Joan Gamper Trophy against his former club, Al Ahly.

Before the expected arrival of Gabriel Jesus, Abdelkarim was the only recognised out-and-out striker in the first-team squad. His brief appearance against Rayo Vallecano therefore offered a significant indication of the confidence placed in him by manager Hansi Flick.

Flick had signalled before the match that Abdelkarim could be given an opportunity after following his progress during training and pre-season.

“We are thinking about giving minutes to players who deserve it. He deserves it. I see how he develops day by day. He has the right style and mentality. He deserves to play and he will play. We have to give him minutes and an opportunity to show the quality he possesses in a league match,” Flick said.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Abdelkarim’s first-team debut created an unusual parallel with the early career of Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal.

Abdelkarim began his development with Barcelona’s youth teams, yet made his senior debut under Flick before appearing for Barcelona Atletic. Yamal followed the same sequence, making his first-team breakthrough before playing for the club’s reserve side.

The opportunity against Rayo Vallecano was therefore both a personal milestone for Abdelkarim and a notable moment in Barcelona’s recent promotion of young players. Flick’s decision fulfilled the promise he had made before the match and allowed the teenager to experience competitive first-team football in front of the Camp Nou crowd.

His introduction also came at a point when Barcelona were preparing to strengthen their attacking options with Gabriel Jesus. Despite playing only five minutes, Abdelkarim’s involvement underlined the progress he had made since joining the senior team for pre-season and capped a campaign in which he had emerged as the squad’s most prolific scorer during preparation.
