Arsenal edge Aston Villa as Bukayo Saka strikes in Premier League week two

Bukayo Saka scored the only goal as Arsenal beat Aston Villa 1-0 in the second week of the Premier League season.

The decisive moment came in the second half when Riccardo Calafiori played the ball into the area for Saka, who finished skilfully into the bottom-left corner beyond Zion Suzuki.

Arsenal had earlier seen a penalty appeal rejected after Ian Maatsen went down following a challenge. Referee Jared Gillett initially allowed play to continue, then reviewed the incident using video technology before confirming there would be no penalty and that the match should carry on.

Villa created one of the clearest chances of the opening period when Emiliano Buendia collected a loose ball on the edge of the area and struck the crossbar. John McGinn also tried his luck from distance but sent his effort over David Raya’s goal.

Arsenal gradually took control of possession and built attacks through a series of short passes. They held 59% of the ball, compared with Aston Villa’s 41%, while the total shots count was four to three in Arsenal’s favour.

Saka was involved regularly before his goal. He moved well towards the edge of the area but sent a weak effort over the bar, while two further attempts to find team-mates with passes through the Villa defence were intercepted. A clever touch from the Arsenal forward was also blocked and deflected behind for a corner.

Declan Rice went close with a header from a corner, although his effort lacked the power to seriously trouble the goalkeeper. He also delivered a free-kick from distance, but Aston Villa’s defence cleared it. Martin Odegaard took another free-kick for Arsenal, which was also dealt with by the home defence.

Gabriel headed over from a dangerous position, while Myles Lewis-Skelly saw a shot blocked and Arsenal were awarded a corner. Ben White and Rice both sent balls into the area, but neither delivery created a clear opportunity.

Aston Villa responded with crosses from McGinn, Matty Cash and Ross Barkley. Arsenal defended McGinn’s delivery with a header, while Raya comfortably claimed Barkley’s cross after it travelled close to goal. Cash did well to control a pass inside the area and shoot, but his effort struck a defender and was cleared. George Hemmings also crossed into the box, only for Raya to come off his line and collect.

Kai Havertz was caught offside, while Maatsen fired well wide from the edge of the penalty area. Nicolas Jackson sent a cross into the box, but none of his team-mates were able to connect with it. Christos Tzolis twice supplied dangerous crosses for Arsenal, with Villa defenders clearing both.

The match included a series of substitutions. Arsenal made a first, second, third, fourth and fifth change, while Aston Villa made first, second, third and fourth substitutions. The fixture also featured players including Martin Zubimendi, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Ross Barkley, Alejandro Garnacho, Christian Mosquera, Ezri Konsa, Mikel Merino, Bruno Guimaraes, Tammy Abraham, Alisson, Eberechi Eze and Nicolas Jackson.

McGinn and Alisson were booked for Aston Villa, while Maatsen received a yellow card late in the game. Ricardo Calafiori was penalised for an overly forceful challenge, with Gillett awarding a free-kick.

Arsenal continued to circulate the ball in midfield during the closing stages. Five minutes remained when the visitors still led 1-0, and the referee added eight minutes of stoppage time. Saka also sent a late pass into the area that was diverted behind for a corner before Arsenal held on for victory.
