Barcelona lead Rayo Vallecano 3-2 after thrilling five-goal start

Barcelona moved into a 3-2 lead against Rayo Vallecano in a frenetic La Liga encounter, with Lamine Yamal and Raphinha among the scorers and Sergio Camello netting twice for the hosts.

Rayo took the lead through Camello after a swift counter-attack. Alvaro Garcia carried the ball towards the penalty area before sending a low cross into the centre, where Camello arrived from deep to finish into the middle of the goal.

Barcelona responded with sustained pressure and eventually equalised through Raphinha. A clever pass from Xavi Espart near the edge of the area released the Brazilian, who controlled the ball, moved past the challenge and fired into the net.

Yamal then completed Barcelona’s comeback with a superb long-range strike. Marc Bernal found him on the right, and the teenager cut inside before curling an effort into the far top corner.

Barcelona dominated possession, enjoying 70% of the ball compared with Rayo’s 30%, and had registered 12 shots to their opponents’ one after half an hour.

Rayo goalkeeper Dani Cardenas was required to make several important saves during the opening period. He denied Raphinha after the forward met a clipped cross inside the area, while he also kept out a powerful effort from Marc Bernal and dealt comfortably with a low drive from Anthony Gordon.

Barcelona continued to threaten from set pieces. Raphinha sent a free-kick just wide of the right post, while Pedri saw a powerful effort blocked after a short routine involving Raphinha. Lamine Yamal also created opportunities with several dangerous deliveries from the right, although Rayo’s defence repeatedly cleared the danger.

The hosts remained a threat on the counter-attack. Jorge de Frutos forced a steady save from Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia after receiving a pass through the right channel, while a cross from Fran Perez was deflected behind for a corner.

After the interval, Barcelona extended their advantage through an own goal. Gordon advanced down the left side of the penalty area and drove a low cross towards the centre. Florian attempted to clear but instead diverted the ball into his own net.

Rayo reduced the deficit when Camello scored his second of the match. Unai Lopez delivered a corner from the right towards the middle of the area, where Camello rose to head the ball into the right side of the goal.

Joan Garcia then produced an excellent save to prevent Camello completing a hat-trick, stopping his effort in front of goal before Barcelona’s defence cleared the rebound. Garcia also comfortably held a long-range attempt by Boari.

Barcelona thought they had scored a further goal through Jules Kounde, but the effort was disallowed after a video assistant referee review found him offside. The referee added three minutes of stoppage time.

Rayo made an enforced substitution during the first half and made further changes after the break, while Barcelona also introduced two substitutes. Despite Barcelona’s control of possession and a series of short passes in midfield, Rayo continued to press high and search for an equaliser.

Other notable moments included an offside decision against Dani Olmo, further attempts from Yamal and Gordon, and a defensive covering challenge by Pau Cubarsi to stop Camello breaking through. At the latest stage covered by the match report, Barcelona were still ahead 3-2.
