Carrick delighted as Manchester United respond to disappointment with 5-2 win

Michael Carrick said Manchester United’s emphatic 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town came at the right time after their opening-day defeat by Hull City.

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as United secured their first Premier League win of the season, with Bryan Mbeumo also on target and Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves putting through his own net. The result gives Manchester United their first three points, while Ipswich remain on three points after beating Sunderland in the opening round.

“It’s great to get results like this,” Carrick told the BBC. “I said after last week’s game that we were disappointed, and it affected us throughout the week. We dealt with it well and, in the end, did not overthink it.”

United had lost their first league match against Hull City, but reacted strongly against Ipswich after falling behind at home.

“We shouldn’t be 1-0 down at home,” Carrick said. “There will be setbacks during the season, but the important thing is how you respond to them. Quality shows in moments like these, and we played a good game because we scored the goals and secured a great win.”

Ipswich had opportunities during the match, but United recovered and eventually took control.

“They had a few chances, but we got back into the game and imposed ourselves,” Carrick added. “The second half was particularly good. I’m really pleased, and there are a lot of positives.”

Fernandes played a central role in the result, scoring three times to lead Manchester United to their first league victory of the campaign. Carrick also praised the Portugal international’s work in midfield, highlighting his understanding with Matheus, Kobbie and Yuri.

“Bruno had a good game today,” said Carrick. “You could see the understanding in midfield between him, Matheus, Kobbie and Yuri.”

The United manager said Fernandes’ performance was especially significant after the difficulties of the previous week.

“For him to come back and regain his form after the week Bruno had, that makes the whole week good for him,” Carrick said.

Carrick also acknowledged that Ipswich had been unfortunate in the game, despite being unable to hold on to the lead.

“Of course, there are two sides to it,” he said. “I understand how disappointed they feel. It’s one of those things that happens in football, and we took advantage of it.”

The result leaves Manchester United with three points from their first two league matches. Ipswich also have three points, having opened their campaign with a victory against Sunderland, but their second-round defeat means they could not build on that start.

For United, the five-goal performance provided an immediate response to the setback against Hull City and gave Fernandes, in particular, a chance to restore confidence with a decisive individual display.
