Hossam Abdelmaged’s agent denies Al Ahly talks over return to Egypt

Samer Salama, the agent of Ludogorets defender Hossam Abdelmaged, says Al Ahly have not contacted him about signing the Egypt international and dismissed reports that the player could soon return to the Egyptian league.

Abdelmaged joined the Bulgarian club from Zamalek in a deal worth €1.5m. However, despite speculation linking him with a move to Al Ahly, his representative says there have been no negotiations over a transfer.

“Al Ahly have not contacted me so far regarding the signing of Hossam Abdelmaged, contrary to what has been reported,” Salama told FilGoal.com.

He added: “The player is fully focused on competing with his club for the Bulgarian league title.”

Salama said reports of an imminent return to Egypt were unfounded, concluding: “The news concerning his return to the Egyptian league has no basis in truth.”

Abdelmaged has previously addressed the possibility of joining Al Ahly, saying the club’s stature meant it would be an attractive destination for any player, while insisting that his own move from Zamalek had not been planned as a route to the Cairo club.

“Al Ahly is a big club and every player wishes to play for it, but my situation is different,” he said. “If I had been thinking about moving there, I would have waited until the remaining six months of my contract with Zamalek had ended and then left as a free agent, but I did not do that.”

The defender has made only one appearance for Ludogorets since completing his move, coming on as a substitute for six minutes against Slavia Sofia.

Abdelmaged was promoted to Zamalek’s first team from the club’s youth ranks in the summer of 2019. His contract with the Egyptian club was due to expire next summer.

During his time with Zamalek, he played 171 matches, scoring 15 goals and providing one assist. He won three Egyptian league titles, two Egypt Cups, one CAF Super Cup and one CAF Confederation Cup with the club.

He also represented Egypt at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, appearing in two matches without scoring or registering an assist. Abdelmaged did score the decisive penalty in Egypt’s victory over Australia in the round of 32.

For now, his agent’s comments indicate that the defender’s immediate attention remains with Ludogorets and their pursuit of the Bulgarian league title, rather than a return to domestic football in Egypt.
