Chelsea set rare Premier League record as defensive wait goes on

Chelsea have continued their remarkable attacking start to the 2026-27 Premier League season, but their latest burst of early goals against Brighton has been accompanied by an unwanted defensive statistic.

The Blues led 3-1 at half-time in their second league match of the campaign, after scoring inside the opening four minutes for the second game in succession.

Romeo Lavia put Chelsea ahead after only four minutes at Brighton, with Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro adding further goals for Xabi Alonso’s side. Brighton’s Malick Yalcouye pulled one back before the interval.

Opta said Chelsea had become only the second team in Premier League history to score within the opening four minutes of each of their first two matches in a season.

“Chelsea are only the second side ever to score in the opening four minutes of both of their first two Premier League games of a season, after Bolton Wanderers in 2002-03.”

Bolton Wanderers achieved the same feat at the start of the 2002-03 campaign, meaning Chelsea’s opening two matches have placed them in a rare section of Premier League history.

However, the impressive attacking numbers have been offset by a continuing failure to keep opponents out. According to Squawka, Chelsea have now conceded in 18 consecutive Premier League matches, a run which began during the previous season.

The latest defensive setback came despite another positive attacking display from Chelsea, who had also made a fast start in their opening fixture.

They began the season with a 3-2 victory away at Fulham, taking the lead after just one minute when Joao Pedro found the net.

Chelsea have therefore scored in the opening minute of one league match and within the first four minutes of the next, while also conceding in both games. Against Brighton, their three first-half goals gave them a strong platform, but the goal conceded by Malick Yalcouye ensured their clean-sheet wait continued.

Their record after the opening stages of the new campaign presents a clear contrast: Chelsea have been among the Premier League’s quickest and most productive teams in attack, yet remain unable to prevent opponents from scoring.

That combination has produced a lively beginning under Xabi Alonso, with Chelsea’s attacking threat evident from the opening moments of both matches. But until they end their 18-game run without a clean sheet, their defensive record will remain a significant concern alongside the goals.
