Chelsea score twice as Pedro Neto and Romeo Lavia punish Brighton in Premier League week two

Chelsea scored twice against Brighton, with Pedro Neto and Romeo Lavia finding the net as the second-week Premier League contest developed into a game of pressure, set-pieces and missed opportunities.

The opening goal came from a corner on the right delivered by Pedro Neto. Joao Pedro met the cross with a header, but Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was unable to hold the effort. Lavia reacted quickest to the loose ball and fired it into the net to put Chelsea ahead.

Brighton attempted to respond by pushing forward, but Chelsea’s defensive shape held firm. The visitors continued to look for an opening from set-pieces, with Pascal Groß repeatedly involved from the left.

One of Groß’s deliveries travelled across the penalty area without making contact with any player before going out for a goal kick. On another occasion, his cross was met by Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who punched the ball clear with one fist.

Brighton also won a corner from the left which ended safely in Martinez’s hands. The corner count stood at two for Brighton and one for Chelsea.

Chelsea had the opportunity to extend their advantage when Joao Pedro was left unmarked inside the penalty area. He took the shot, but it went narrowly wide of the right-hand post.

The second Chelsea goal arrived through Pedro Neto. Morgan Rogers collected the ball inside the penalty area on the left and played a low pass across to Neto. With no defender close enough to challenge him, Neto struck first time and sent the ball into the left side of the goal.

That gave Chelsea a second goal and left Brighton needing to find a way back into the game. Their players continued to apply pressure, while Chelsea maintained an organised defensive line to protect their advantage.

The match statistics listed Chelsea with four shots to Brighton’s one. Chelsea also won a free-kick in the defensive half after Romeo Lavia was fouled.

The early stages had begun with both sides looking to establish control, but the decisive moments came from Chelsea’s ability to threaten in the penalty area. The first goal followed a corner and quick reaction from Lavia, while the second resulted from a composed finish by Neto after Rogers had created space on the left.

For Brighton, Groß remained a central figure in their attempts to create danger from dead-ball situations. His deliveries produced several corners, although Chelsea dealt with each one and prevented Brighton from turning their pressure into a goal.

Joao Pedro’s missed chance proved another important moment, as Brighton were unable to take advantage of the opportunity created by his unmarked position. Instead, Chelsea scored again through Neto and strengthened their position in the Premier League week-two match.
