Juventus close in on Pape Matar Sarr deal as Tottenham midfielder seeks career revival

Juventus are in the final stages of negotiations with Tottenham over a deal for Pape Matar Sarr, with the Senegal midfielder in line for a more prominent role in Turin.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the proposed move would initially be a paid loan worth 3m euros (£2.6m), with an obligation to buy that could rise to 30m euros (£25.9m) if certain conditions are met.

Those conditions are understood to include Sarr making a specified number of appearances and Juventus qualifying for European competition.

The transfer would offer the 23-year-old an opportunity to rebuild his career after struggling to establish himself as a regular first-team figure at Tottenham. The London club have endured two difficult collective seasons, finishing a concerning 17th in the Premier League, and are now reshaping their squad.

Sarr is among the players who could leave as part of that process.

The negotiations accelerated after Juventus ended their pursuit of Franck Kessie. The Italian club subsequently identified Sarr as a suitable alternative, with his energy, physical presence and versatility in midfield all viewed positively.

Sarr had also recently been linked with Everton, but he could now be heading south to Turin instead.

Juventus are seeking midfield reinforcements because of a shortage of available options. France international Khephren Thuram is being affected by a persistent knee problem, which could allow Sarr to secure playing time soon after arriving.

He would also be reunited with former Tottenham team-mate Guglielmo Vicario and would play alongside Ivory Coast international Jeremie Boga.

At Juventus, Sarr could provide another midfield option alongside established players including captain Manuel Locatelli, Weston McKennie and Douglas Luiz.

The proposed arrangement would also give Tottenham the possibility of recouping up to 30m euros, helping offset some of the significant spending undertaken by the club during the summer.

For Sarr, the move would represent an important chance to regain momentum. The midfielder, who was born in Thiaroye, has lost ground not only at club level but also within the Senegal national team.

Habib Diarra has moved ahead of him in the pecking order for his country, underlining the extent of Sarr’s recent difficulties.

A move to Juventus could give him the elements currently missing from his career: regular football, greater responsibility and a project capable of restoring the progress he appeared to be making only a few seasons ago.

Sarr joined Tottenham with considerable promise but has never managed to secure a sustained role as one of the club’s midfield leaders. Juventus’ need for additional depth could provide him with the platform to change that, provided the final stages of the discussions result in an agreement.
