Steven Gerrard questions Liverpool’s Anfield intensity after Nottingham Forest draw

Steven Gerrard has warned Liverpool that technical quality alone will not be enough to sustain a Premier League title challenge after their 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest at Anfield.

Liverpool were held on Saturday in the second round of the 2026-27 Premier League season, prompting their former captain to question the character and intensity shown by his old side during the match.

Speaking as a pundit for TNT Sports, Gerrard said Liverpool possessed the talent and footballing ability required to compete for major honours, but believed they were not showing enough aggression in key battles. He described the team as “too nice”.

The former Liverpool captain said the issue was not centred on one particular player. Instead, he argued that the entire group needed to respond better during periods when matches demanded greater physical strength and determination.

That included Liverpool’s approach to pressing, winning the ball back and taking control of the contest, according to Gerrard. He said the team needed players capable of changing the character of a game through more than individual skill.

Gerrard’s view was that Liverpool must display a stronger competitive personality, one which makes opponents feel that playing against them will be difficult. He also stressed that possession and passing, although important, could not by themselves be relied upon to win matches in the Premier League.

The former captain said that was particularly true at Anfield, where Liverpool needed to generate a greater response from the stands and impose the rhythm of the game on their opponents.

He believes Liverpool must become tougher both physically and mentally, especially in matches where they fail to establish the expected advantage of playing at home. Gerrard said they could not afford to allow opponents to leave Anfield with a positive result after winning too many of the important physical contests.

The draw with Nottingham Forest has therefore led Gerrard to issue an early warning about the demands of a season in which Liverpool will be expected to compete for trophies. While he acknowledged the squad’s technical quality and individual talent, he felt the side needed more force and resilience to turn control of the ball into control of matches.

For Gerrard, Liverpool’s challenge is not simply to produce moments of skill. They must also show the strength, urgency and collective character required when matches become more demanding, or they risk regretting dropped points later in the title race.
