Simeone demands more from Alvarez as Atletico leave transfer plans open

Atletico de Madrid manager Diego Simeone says his side must help Julian Alvarez continue his progress, while refusing to rule out a late development before the transfer window closes.

Simeone was speaking after Atletico’s 3-1 victory over Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan on Saturday evening in the third round of La Liga. Alvarez scored twice as the Madrid club secured an important away win.

The Argentine manager praised his players for the way they dealt with Sevilla’s approach and their ability to move quickly from defence into attack.

“We were fortunate to produce a very good performance. The boys did an excellent job both in winning the ball back and, especially, in the transition when bringing the ball out. We knew Sevilla were coming off two very good results, with that enthusiasm that drives them to try to press high,” said Simeone.

He also highlighted the confidence Alvarez has gained since helping Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The striker played in every match during that tournament and has continued to be an important part of Simeone’s plans at Atletico.

“There is no need to say too much; things can be seen. It is clear that the motivation and the impact winning the World Cup had on his heart and mind, and the confidence he received from the coach because he played every match, are being repaid to us today through his football and his work – he scored two goals,” Simeone said.

“We need him. We need this from him, and clearly we will demand that he maintains it. That is what is required, and it is the most complicated thing.”

Asked about what Morten Hjulmand could bring to Atletico, Simeone pointed to the midfielder’s ability to provide balance. Hjulmand is adapting to the demands of Spanish football after coming from a competition played at a slower pace, according to his manager.

“Balance, basically. He comes from a league that is played at a slower rhythm and does not have the speed found in La Liga or the English league. Little by little, he is trying to gain security and speed, especially in his play. He has a good pass between the lines and is strong in the air,” said Simeone.

“We hope he continues to improve. We need him and we will demand that from him because he has the qualities to help us.”

Simeone was then asked whether Atletico could make another move before the transfer market closes. He declined to give a direct answer, saying the situation surrounding Alvarez made it better not to speculate.

“I will not say it now because of what is happening with Julian and everything surrounding him, so that you do not add to it from your side,” he said.

“I always say that something can happen; I say the same thing every year. This is football, and something can always happen. But I am not saying it for any particular reason, OK?” he added with a laugh.

Simeone was also asked how Alvarez was coping with the attention surrounding him.

“He is going through his own personal process. We will be here, I repeat once again, to help him from a sporting perspective, and for him to help us, because he is an exceptional player,” said the Atletico manager.
