Berardi’s late winner puts Sassuolo forward into Serie A’s one-club scoring hall of fame

Domenico Berardi scored a late winner as Sassuolo beat Torino 2-1 on Saturday, reaching 131 Serie A goals for the club and moving into sixth place among the competition’s highest scorers for a single team.

With the match heading towards a draw, Berardi struck in the 78th minute to secure Sassuolo’s first points of the season. The result also strengthened his standing as one of the most important figures in the club’s history and placed him among an elite group of Serie A players.

Berardi’s goal moved him beyond Bologna great Ezio Pascutti, who scored 130 times for the club in the Italian top flight. The Sassuolo forward is now the sixth player to have scored at least 131 goals for one team in Serie A.

Only five players have scored more for a single club in the competition. Francesco Totti leads the list with 250 goals for Roma, followed by Alessandro Del Piero, who scored 188 for Juventus.

Giampiero Boniperti is third with 178 goals for Juventus, while Luigi Riva scored 156 for Cagliari. Lautaro Martinez, the current Inter captain, occupies fifth place with 132 goals.

That leaves Berardi just one goal behind Martinez, with the Sassuolo forward now within reach of another landmark in the next stages of the season. His latest effort also ensured Sassuolo avoided a second successive defeat after beginning their campaign with a 2-1 loss to Atalanta.

Sassuolo will face Bologna in the third round on Sunday, 6 September, when Berardi will have the opportunity to continue his pursuit of the players above him in the rankings.

The victory over Torino came as Sassuolo looked set to settle for a point. Instead, Berardi’s decisive finish delivered a first league win of the season and added another notable achievement to his record with the club.

The 131-goal total places him beyond Pascutti and confirms his position among the most prolific players in Serie A history when goals scored for one club are considered. Totti, Del Piero, Boniperti, Riva and Martinez remain ahead of him, but the gap to the Inter forward is now only one goal.
