Newcastle condemn Tottenham to second straight Premier League defeat

Newcastle United secured a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur to leave the hosts without a point after their opening two Premier League matches of the season.

Tottenham had been hoping for a positive result in their first home league game of the campaign after suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat by Brentford in their opening fixture. Newcastle, meanwhile, arrived in north London having been denied victory by a late Liverpool goal in a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park last week.

The result is an early setback for Tottenham manager Thomas Frank, whose side had entered the season with renewed optimism after significant investment in the transfer market. The club are attempting to improve on their 17th-place finish in the previous campaign.

However, Tottenham again struggled to provide a consistent threat in the final third. New signing Omar Marmoush made his debut after completing a move from Manchester City only a few days earlier, but the home side were unable to turn possession into clear chances.

Winger Savio missed the match because of injury, further reducing Tottenham’s attacking options.

Newcastle were forced to defend for long periods in the first half, with goalkeeper Lucas Hornicek playing a key role in keeping the score level. He denied Mathys Tel and Jan Paul van Hecke as Tottenham looked to break the deadlock.

The visitors grew into the contest after the interval and took the lead shortly after the hour mark. Anthony Elanga received the ball inside the penalty area, turned sharply under pressure and finished confidently to put Newcastle in front.

Tottenham were unable to respond before Newcastle extended their advantage with 20 minutes remaining.

DR Congo forward Yoane Wissa collected a header from Nick Woltemade with his back to goal before producing an inventive finish, hooking the ball over his head and into the net.

The win gives Newcastle encouragement after the disappointment of conceding late against Liverpool last weekend, while Tottenham must now wait for their first league victory of the season.

Spurs will have another opportunity to claim three points when they travel to Nottingham Forest next week. Newcastle will return to home action against Bournemouth.

The result leaves Tottenham facing an early fight to recover momentum following a difficult start, while Newcastle can look ahead to their next fixture with confidence after earning their first league win of the campaign.
