Victor Munoz rescues Liverpool in draw with Nottingham Forest

Liverpool needed a late goal from Victor Munoz to draw 2-2 with Nottingham Forest, extending the Reds’ winless run in the Premier League to six matches. The result leaves Liverpool with two points from their opening two games, while Forest are still waiting for their first victory under new head coach Oliver Glasner.

Both sides had endured disappointing results on the opening weekend and were looking for an immediate response. Forest made the more positive start at the City Ground, putting Liverpool under pressure and creating several openings in the early stages.

Jeremy Jacquet made a well-timed defensive intervention to deny Igor Jesus, before Dan Ndoye headed wide from a promising position.

Forest’s pressure eventually brought a reward midway through the first half. Morgan Gibbs-White was again central to their attacking play, slipping a pass into the path of Ndoye. The Switzerland international kept his composure and guided the ball into the far corner to give the hosts the lead.

Liverpool responded with greater attacking intent, with Florian Wirtz providing the main threat. The Germany international appeared to have brought Liverpool level when he turned sharply before placing a low shot into the bottom corner.

However, the goal was ruled out after Jeremie Frimpong was judged to have been offside during the build-up.

Wirtz came close again when his header was tipped over by Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels. Victor Munoz also had a good chance to equalise but curled his effort wide from close range.

Forest continued to look dangerous when breaking forward and nearly extended their advantage before the interval. Igor Jesus met a cross with a first-time strike, but Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker made an excellent save to keep his side within reach.

Liverpool eventually found their equaliser shortly after the hour mark. Cody Gakpo created the opening from the right before delivering a simple pass across the face of goal. Alexander Isak was unmarked and had the uncomplicated task of tapping the ball into an empty net.

The visitors’ momentum was short-lived, though, as Forest regained the lead less than 10 minutes later.

Substitute Liam Delap reacted quickly to a throw-in, releasing Neco Williams behind the Liverpool defence. Williams, a former Liverpool player, tried to lift the ball over Alisson. His attempt went wide, but the goalkeeper brought him down in the process.

The referee awarded Forest a penalty, with Gibbs-White taking responsibility from the spot. He sent Alisson the wrong way to restore the home side’s advantage.

Liverpool pushed forward in search of another response and were rewarded with fewer than 10 minutes remaining. Munoz made up for his earlier miss by scoring his first Liverpool goal, striking a powerful effort that hit the crossbar before finding the net.

The late equaliser gave Liverpool hope of completing a comeback, but they could not find a winning goal. The draw extended their disappointing league sequence to six matches without victory and ensured Forest remain without a win in Glasner’s first games in charge.
