Celtic beat Falkirk 2-1 as Haitham Hassan makes first appearance

Celtic moved to the top of the Scottish league with a 2-1 victory over Falkirk at Celtic Park, as Egyptian international Haitham Hassan played 63 minutes in his first appearance for the club.

Camilo Duran scored both of Celtic’s goals, while Falkirk’s only goal came through an own goal by Celtic defender Colby Donovan. The result gave Celtic nine points after four rounds, although they have a game in hand because of their involvement in European competition.

Celtic made a fast start and appeared to take the lead in the fourth minute when Duran capitalised on an error by the Falkirk goalkeeper. The referee initially ruled out the goal after identifying an infringement, but a review using video assistant referee technology led to the decision being overturned.

The goal was subsequently awarded, allowing the hosts to move in front early at Celtic Park.

Celtic continued to threaten as Falkirk struggled to deal with the home side’s attacking movement. In the 29th minute, Kieran Tierney found space behind the Falkirk defence and delivered a precise cross into the area.

Duran met the delivery and guided it into the net to double Celtic’s advantage. The goal completed his brace and put the hosts in a strong position before half-time.

Hassan, an Egyptian international, remained on the pitch until the 63rd minute as Celtic looked to maintain control of the match. Falkirk, however, continued to search for a way back into the contest and were handed an opportunity when Celtic made a mistake in defence.

That moment arrived in the 72nd minute. Ben Parkinson broke clear after taking advantage of the defensive error and tried to finish one-on-one with the Celtic goalkeeper. The goalkeeper made a save, but the ball struck Celtic defender Colby Donovan and rebounded into his own net.

The own goal reduced Falkirk’s deficit and gave the visitors renewed hope, but Celtic held on to secure an important victory. Duran’s two goals ultimately proved decisive, despite the late setback caused by Donovan’s unfortunate touch.

The win leaves Celtic top of the Scottish league on nine points. Their position is strengthened by the fact they have played one match fewer than some of their rivals, with that fixture postponed because of their European commitments.

Celtic will return to league action on Wednesday when they face Aberdeen in the fifth round. Rangers will also play on Wednesday in the same round of fixtures.
