Patrick Maswanganyi becomes Al-Khaldiya’s most valuable player after Orlando Pirates exit

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi has joined Bahraini club Al-Khaldiya as its most valuable player, with the 28-year-old also expected to rank among the team’s highest earners.

Maswanganyi’s move to the Middle East follows a demanding spell at Orlando Pirates, where he faced the pressure of producing consistent performances for a demanding support base and coach.

His transfer could be viewed as a move into a less intense football environment while also strengthening his financial position. The Bahraini Dinar is valued at least 42 times higher than the South African Rand.

However, Maswanganyi will still be expected to justify his status at Al-Khaldiya. His current market value is estimated at €1.3m (R24.2m), making him the most highly valued player in the club’s squad.

Moroccan centre-back Abdelhak Assal is Al-Khaldiya’s second-most valuable player, with a market value of €800,000 (R14.9m). Assal recently joined the Bahraini club on a free transfer after spending three years with RS Berkane. He has also represented the Morocco senior national team.

Croatian striker Domagoj Drozdek is next on the list, valued at €750,000 (R14m). He previously played for Apollon Limassol and moved to Al-Khaldiya from Persian Gulf Pro League side Tractor.

Tunisian left-back Oussema Shili completes the club’s four highest-valued players, with a market valuation of €650,000 (R12.1m). He arrived from Club Africain and has also played for Esperance de Tunis.

Maswanganyi’s arrival comes after he brought an end to his time at Orlando Pirates, where the regular demands of performing under close scrutiny eventually took their toll. The move gives him a fresh start abroad, but his role at Al-Khaldiya means expectations will remain high.

The Bahraini club’s squad has a combined market value of €8.5m (R159m), according to Transfermarkt. That figure is at least two-and-a-half times lower than the value of the Orlando Pirates squad, which is listed at €21.6m (R403m).

Maswanganyi’s valuation places him well above every other player at Al-Khaldiya, although the figures do not necessarily indicate the financial terms of his contract.

Transfermarkt market values are estimates and do not account for individual salary packages or the conditions created by demand and supply in the transfer market. As a result, Maswanganyi’s actual earnings in Bahrain could be considerably higher than the valuation suggests.

That financial advantage will ultimately depend on whether he can meet the expectations attached to being Al-Khaldiya’s prized asset. His challenge now is to turn that status into consistent performances after leaving the pressure of Orlando Pirates behind.
