Nigeria football transition puts Kunle Soname in frame for NFF leadership

The National Sports Commission (NSC) is reportedly favouring Kunle Soname to lead the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on an interim basis, following the collective resignation of the federation’s executive committee.

Soname is one of several prominent figures being considered as Nigerian football prepares for a change at the top. Former NFF president Amaju Pinnick and respected former Nigeria international Segun Odegbami are also among the names being discussed for a possible role in the temporary administration.

However, reports in several Nigerian media outlets suggest that the NSC’s preferred option is Soname. No final appointment has been confirmed, but the reported preference places him at the centre of discussions over how the federation will be managed during the transition.

The interim committee would be expected to maintain the NFF’s day-to-day activities while also organising fresh elections. Its role would therefore extend beyond simply filling the leadership gap created by the executive committee’s collective departure.

The process is likely to attract close attention from both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA. The autonomy of the Nigerian football federation remains a central issue, particularly as plans are considered for an interim structure and a new electoral process.

Any temporary leadership arrangement will need to preserve continuity within the NFF while preparing the organisation for the next stage of its governance. The identity of the person chosen to lead that process could therefore have significance for Nigerian football well beyond the initial transition period.

If the current reports prove accurate, Soname could take charge of the country’s football administration at a particularly sensitive time. His possible appointment would come as the NFF works to move from the resignation of its executive committee towards new elections and a more permanent leadership structure.

The developments are also being watched in the context of the Super Eagles and the wider national game. Until a decision is formally reached, Soname, Pinnick and Odegbami remain among the personalities linked with the interim role, while the NSC’s reported preference indicates that Soname may currently be the leading option.

A change at the head of the NFF would give the temporary committee responsibility for guiding Nigerian football through an uncertain period. It would also place the federation’s relationship with CAF and FIFA under scrutiny, with the question of institutional independence expected to remain central throughout the transition.
