Kylian Mbappe hat-trick inspires Real Madrid win over Real Sociedad
Kylian Mbappe scored three times as Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu to move top of the league after two matches.
The France forward opened the scoring in the 40th minute, finishing after a powerful run and a precise pass from Federico Valverde. Real Sociedad responded just before half-time when Luka Sucic reacted quickest to a rebound inside the penalty area.
Mbappe restored Real Madrid’s advantage in the 60th minute, before Vinicius Junior added a third eight minutes later. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward then completed his hat-trick with about 10 minutes remaining, chipping the ball over goalkeeper Alex Remiro after a teasing pass from Vinicius Junior.
The victory gives Jose Mourinho’s side six points from their opening two league games. They began the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Espanyol and are now at the top of the standings.
Real Madrid made an aggressive start in the capital, with Mbappe creating the first significant opening in the seventh minute. He found space from a tight angle but could not beat Remiro.
Real Sociedad also threatened early on. Mikel Oyarzabal struck a powerful effort that was deflected wide by Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for a corner as Imanol’s side looked to unsettle the hosts.
Madrid missed another opportunity to take the lead when Valverde won possession in the opposition half and Mbappe sent a pass into space for Vinicius Junior. Remiro again stood firm to deny the forward.
Real Sociedad’s Sergio Gomez then had a chance inside the area, but his volley flew off target. The visitors were made to pay shortly afterwards when Valverde’s driving move and pass allowed Mbappe to produce a composed finish.
Sucic’s equaliser briefly changed the momentum. He was first to the loose ball after Courtois had been tested, giving Real Sociedad a level score only moments before the interval.
Mbappe was denied in a one-on-one situation with Remiro soon after the break, but he made no mistake with his next opportunity. A swift exchange with Jude Bellingham opened the way for his second goal and put Real Madrid back in front.
Bellingham was involved again for the third, supplying Vinicius Junior, who finished to extend the home side’s lead. Mbappe completed the scoring in style, lifting Vinicius Junior’s pass over the advancing Remiro.
Real Madrid’s next fixture is a home match against Malaga. Real Sociedad, who remain bottom of the table without a point from their first two games, will play Espanyol next.
