Liverpool draw Tottenham in Carabao Cup third round

Liverpool have been drawn against Tottenham in the standout tie of the English League Cup third round, while holders Manchester City will face Norwich City.

The third-round draw features the nine clubs that qualified for European competition through last season’s Premier League, alongside the 23 teams who progressed from the second round.

Liverpool, the competition’s most successful club with 10 titles, will host Tottenham in one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures. Manchester United will play Brighton, while Manchester City begin their title defence against Norwich City.

The third-round ties are scheduled to take place between 7 and 14 September.

The draw also produced meetings between several Premier League sides and lower-division opposition. Arsenal will travel to Ipswich Town, Aston Villa will visit Coventry City and Newcastle will face Millwall.

Crystal Palace were paired with Middlesbrough, while Bournemouth will play Lincoln City. Everton will host Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham will meet either Fulham or Wimbledon.

Chelsea’s opponents will be confirmed after their second-round tie against Luton Town, with the winners set to face Leeds United.

The remaining second-round fixtures will be completed on Thursday, when Chelsea play Luton Town and Fulham meet Wimbledon. Those matches will determine the final two teams in the third-round line-up.

Hull City, Leeds United, Newcastle, Everton, Coventry City, Ipswich Town, Brentford and Tottenham have already advanced to the third round without any major upsets.
