‘Caleb Yirenkyi is the modern N’Golo Kante’ – Brandon Thomas-Asante

Brandon Thomas-Asante has likened Ghana teammate Caleb Yirenkyi to N’Golo Kante, highlighting the midfielder’s qualities after his impressive start to life with Coventry City.

Yirenkyi joined Coventry from Danish club FC Nordsjaelland in August as the most expensive signing in the Championship side’s history, arriving with significant expectations after a breakthrough spell in Denmark.

The 20-year-old has quickly offered signs of why Coventry manager Frank Lampard pushed to bring him to England, producing assists in pre-season and the League Cup.

He also started Coventry’s opening Premier League game against Arsenal before setting up Taiwo Awoniyi in their 4-2 League Cup victory over Plymouth Argyle.

Thomas-Asante, who has played alongside Yirenkyi for both Coventry and Ghana, believes the youngster’s style makes him comparable to the former France international.

“I call him the modern N’Golo Kante. He’s so quiet and keeps himself to himself. However, he is a really confident character. He is quietly confident,” he told Premier League TV.

Yirenkyi’s reputation grew significantly during Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, where he scored the dramatic stoppage-time winner against Panama.

Thomas-Asante was on the pitch for that memorable moment and has since watched his teammate make another significant step in his career by moving to the Premier League.

With Coventry preparing for their first home league fixture against fellow promoted side Hull City, Yirenkyi will hope to continue his promising adaptation to English football.
