Estevao waits for Premier League breakthrough as Chelsea fans call for bigger role

Brazilian winger Estevao has gone from one of world football’s most highly regarded young talents to a peripheral figure at Chelsea within the space of a year, prompting questions over manager Xabi Alonso’s decision-making.

The 19-year-old was left on the bench for Chelsea’s penalty-shootout defeat by Liverpool in the EFL Cup, after which Alonso was asked why he had not given the forward a more prominent role.

Estevao has not started a Premier League match this season. His only starts have come in two early-round EFL Cup games, with Chelsea not involved in European competition this campaign.

“I understand his situation, and he could certainly be happier,” Alonso said. “Every player wants to play. The right time will come for everything, and I am sure his opportunity will arrive. That is my responsibility.

“We have to manage the situation, and we know the season will be long. There will be moments when everyone gets their opportunity.”

Injury cut short promising first season

At the same stage last season, Estevao was producing performances that appeared to justify Chelsea’s decision to sign him from Palmeiras for 34m euros.

The winger impressed with his pace, direct running and ability in wide areas, while he also scored an outstanding goal against Barcelona in the Champions League.

However, his first season at Stamford Bridge ended prematurely in April after he suffered a hamstring injury. The setback ruled him out of the World Cup with Brazil, despite expectations that he could have been included in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

Chelsea appointed Alonso as their permanent manager during the summer transfer window, replacing Liam Rosenior. Since taking charge, Alonso has given Estevao only limited Premier League opportunities, mainly using him as a late substitute.

The Brazilian’s lack of playing time has become a source of frustration among Chelsea supporters. Fans who travelled to support the team at Liverpool spent a significant part of the match chanting Estevao’s name, making clear their desire to see him given more chances.

Estevao’s reduced role represents a sharp change from his status during the previous campaign, when his performances had made him one of the most talked-about emerging players in the game.

Chelsea’s decision to recruit him from Palmeiras reflected that potential, but he has so far been unable to establish himself in Alonso’s starting line-up. With the season continuing and the manager insisting that opportunities will come, Estevao remains waiting for a sustained run in the side.
