Egypt women reach African Championship quarter-finals with win over Senegal

Egypt’s women’s volleyball team have secured their place in the quarter-finals of the African Women’s Championship after beating Senegal in their second Group B match.

Egypt followed up their opening victory over Burkina Faso with a dominant 3-0 win against Senegal. They controlled the contest from the start, taking the three sets 25-12, 25-10 and 25-8.

The result gives Egypt two victories from two matches and confirms their progress to the knockout stage, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the quarter-finals.

The tournament is being hosted by Kenya and will continue until 5 September.

Egypt are due to complete their group-stage campaign against Uganda at 10:00 local time on Thursday, with top spot in Group B at stake. The match is listed as the decisive fixture in the group, with Egypt, Uganda, Burkina Faso and Senegal competing for the two available quarter-final places.

The fixture details also state that Egypt’s next match will be against Senegal on Wednesday.

The winner of the African Women’s Championship will qualify directly for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The tournament therefore carries added significance for the teams competing in Kenya, with the champions guaranteed a place at the next Olympics.

The groups for the competition are:

– Group A: Kenya, Mali, Zambia – Group B: Egypt, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Senegal – Group C: Cameroon, Nigeria, Tunisia, Ghana – Group D: Rwanda, Algeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi

Egypt finished runners-up at the previous edition of the championship in 2023.

Their most recent appearance in the final before that came in 2003, when they won the title for the third time. That remains their most recent championship victory and their third and last African title.

Egypt’s latest success against Senegal underlines their strong start to this year’s competition. They conceded only 30 points across the three sets and have now made a convincing case for a leading position in Group B.

The top two sides from each of the four groups will progress to the quarter-finals, while the eventual African champions will earn direct qualification for Los Angeles 2028.
