Livakovic set for Barcelona medical as first-team place remains undecided

Dominik Livakovic has arrived at Barcelona’s private airport terminal to complete his move from Fenerbahce, but the Croatia goalkeeper is unsure whether he will stay with the Catalan club this season.

Livakovic is due to undergo his medical with Barcelona on Wednesday before signing a four-year contract with the club.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona will pay Fenerbahce €4m for the 30-year-old Croatia international. Livakovic has one year remaining on his contract with the Turkish club.

The agreement is understood to consist of an initial €2m payment, with a further €2m available through add-ons.

However, Barcelona have yet to decide how Livakovic will be used during the coming campaign.

The club’s original plan was to sign the goalkeeper and loan him to Dinamo Zagreb for the season. He would then return to Barcelona next summer, when Wojciech Szczesny’s contract with the club expires.

An alternative option would be for Livakovic to remain at Barcelona immediately and act as back-up to Joan Garcia.

Livakovic acknowledged that his role had not yet been settled when he arrived in Barcelona. Mundo Deportivo quoted him as saying: “I’m very happy to be here. Will I stay here this season? We’ll see.”

His immediate future is expected to depend on Barcelona’s financial position under football’s financial fair play regulations.

If the club has sufficient room within its wage limits, Livakovic will join the squad as the second-choice goalkeeper straight away. If Barcelona do not have enough financial flexibility, they will explore the possibility of sending him out on loan.

Dinamo Zagreb is understood to be one potential destination in that scenario. Livakovic could then return to Barcelona in the summer of 2027 to become the club’s second-choice goalkeeper.

The proposed arrangement reflects Barcelona’s changing goalkeeping situation. Garcia is expected to be considered for the first-team role, while Szczesny’s current contract means the club must plan for a possible change in its back-up options next summer.

Livakovic’s arrival therefore completes the next stage of the transfer but does not yet confirm where he will spend the season. Barcelona must first assess its wage-cap position before deciding whether to keep him at the club or arrange a temporary move elsewhere.

Fenerbahce are set to receive up to €4m for the goalkeeper, despite having only one year remaining on his existing deal. Barcelona’s payment will be split between the fixed fee and performance-related or other additional clauses, with €2m guaranteed and a possible €2m in add-ons.

For Livakovic, the move represents a return to Spanish football after his spell in Turkey, although the club’s financial circumstances mean that his first season in Barcelona could still begin away from the Camp Nou squad.
