Jamie Carragher’s on-air joke about Gary Neville’s trousers has Sky Sports viewers laughing

Jamie Carragher left viewers amused after turning his attention to Gary Neville’s outfit during the return of Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

The former Liverpool defender and former Manchester United full-back were back on screen together for the first edition of the programme this season. However, one of the main talking points quickly shifted from football to Neville’s choice of clothing.

Carragher, 48, reportedly asked: “Can I add one more to watch?”

He then turned towards Neville, pointed at his trousers and added: “Are you going to wear those trousers again?”

The remark prompted laughter from Neville, who explained that he had chosen to wear a pair of baggy trousers.

Carragher continued the teasing by comparing his colleague’s appearance to former footballer Frank Worthington.

Neville, 51, responded by suggesting that Carragher would eventually adopt the same style.

“You’ll find Carragher will be wearing these shoes in two or three years’ time. He’ll catch up,” the Manchester United great said.

Neville then stood up to show viewers his trousers in more detail. He explained that he had been shopping in London on Saturday and defended the outfit.

“This guy styled my clothes… I’ll tell you what, they’re really good. I’m a big fan of them,” Neville said.

Carragher, who has regularly exchanged jokes with Neville during their television work, delivered one final criticism of his former rival’s look.

“What are those shoes? Are they deck shoes?” he asked.

The exchange also appeared to win support from viewers watching at home, with several fans taking to social media to comment on Neville’s outfit.

One wrote: “Gary Neville… those trousers.”

Another added: “But I’m not a fan of Neville’s trousers.”

A third said: “I’ve only just noticed Gary Neville’s trousers during the American football match and I can’t focus on anything else now.”

The light-hearted exchange provided an entertaining moment as the experienced Sky Sports duo resumed their familiar television partnership for the new Monday Night Football season.

Carragher and Neville, who played for Liverpool and Manchester United respectively, have become well known for their outspoken analysis and frequent arguments on air. Their rivalry has often added an extra element to the programme, with both former defenders willing to challenge one another beyond the main football discussion.

The incident was also discussed by fans on the Kooora forums, where supporters can debate sporting subjects and news in greater depth.
