Moroccan forward Taoufik Ben Tayeb secures record European move to Anderlecht

Moroccan forward Taoufik Ben Tayeb has completed a landmark transfer from Union Touarga to Belgian giants Anderlecht, becoming the first player to move directly from the Moroccan league to Europe in a deal of this scale.

The transfer is reportedly worth an initial €4 million, with the total package capable of reaching €5 million through performance-related bonuses and goal-based incentives.

Union Touarga have also negotiated a percentage of any future transfer involving Ben Tayeb, ensuring the Moroccan club could benefit financially if the striker is sold again in the future.

The deal represents the biggest direct transfer from the Moroccan league to a European club, although Union Touarga had the opportunity to earn even more.

The club reportedly received proposals worth more than €6 million from other interested parties. However, both Touarga and Ben Tayeb ultimately opted for Anderlecht, with the sporting project taking precedence over the financial value of the offers.

Anderlecht’s plans for the young striker and the opportunity to continue his development in European football are understood to have played a key role in the decision.

Ben Tayeb is not entirely new to European football. The striker previously gained experience in France after joining Rodez and later Troyes on loan spells, giving him an opportunity to adapt to the demands of football outside Morocco.

His move to Anderlecht now represents another significant step in his development and could provide him with a bigger platform to establish himself at the highest level.

The transfer also surpasses several notable direct moves from the Moroccan league to European football. Achraf Dari previously moved from Wydad Casablanca to French club Brest for around €2.7 million, while Hamza Igamane joined Scottish side Rangers from FAR Rabat for approximately €2.36 million.

For Union Touarga, Ben Tayeb’s transfer represents more than a record financial transaction. It underlines the club’s strategy of identifying and developing young players before giving them a pathway into professional football abroad.

The club has placed particular emphasis on players emerging from the Mohammed VI Football Academy, providing them with competitive opportunities before facilitating moves to European clubs.
