Ghana among 14 nations exempted from first round of U23 AFCON 2027 qualifiers

Ghana have been handed a bye to the second round of qualifying for the 2027 Africa U23 Cup of Nations, after being named among 14 countries exempted from the opening round based on their points ranking.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has placed Ghana alongside some of the continent’s leading U23 sides, including Morocco, Mali, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria, among the teams that will not have to play in the first round.

The other exempted nations are Guinea, Niger, Algeria, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Zambia and Senegal.

The 14 countries will enter the qualification process at the second-round stage, giving them a potential advantage as they seek to reach the 2027 tournament.

Morocco, who are among the highest-ranked teams in the competition, will also avoid the opening round, while Mali, South Africa and Côte d’Ivoire are similarly among the teams benefiting from the ranking-based exemption.

Ghana’s inclusion is significant as the country continues to strengthen its youth development programme and build towards future continental competitions.

The first round of qualifying will therefore involve the remaining participating nations, with the successful teams advancing to meet the 14 seeded sides in the second round.

The U23 AFCON serves as an important pathway for emerging African players to gain international experience and compete at a major continental level.

The 2027 edition is provisionally scheduled to take place in November, although the final dates and calendar are yet to be confirmed by CAF.

The continental football governing body is expected to announce the definitive schedule in due course, including the dates for the various qualifying rounds.

For Ghana, the second-round entry means the Black Meteors will have fewer matches to navigate before the decisive stages of the qualification campaign.

The team will now await the outcome of the first round before learning the identity of their second-round opponents.

With Morocco, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal and other highly ranked nations also entering at the same stage, the second round is expected to feature several potentially high-profile ties.

The Black Meteors will be aiming to negotiate the qualification process successfully and secure a place at the 2027 U23 AFCON, where Africa’s leading young talents will compete for continental honours.
