Julian Alvarez’s Barcelona dream puts Atletico Madrid transfer plans on hold

Julian Alvarez’s determination to join Barcelona has intensified the dispute with Atletico de Madrid, who remain unwilling to sanction his move to the Catalan club. The Argentina striker is focused solely on a switch to Barcelona, while Atletico are currently prepared to consider his departure only if Arsenal make an offer.

The stand-off has placed Atletico in an increasingly difficult position after a hostile reception for Alvarez at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Sunday. The majority of supporters reportedly jeered the forward before, during and after the match. Following the club’s recommendation, Alvarez then walked alone towards the dressing-room tunnel, deepening the tension between the player and the Madrid side.

Atletico’s position has been reinforced by president Enrique Cerezo, chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin and manager Diego Pablo Simeone, who have all established limits the club does not intend to cross. Their stance is that Alvarez will not be allowed to leave for Barcelona, despite the player’s apparent wish to wear the club’s colours.

Alvarez continued to make his preference clear on Monday through an interaction on TikTok. Two days earlier, a user had posted a video showing the striker wearing a Barcelona shirt and performing his familiar Spider-Man-inspired celebration. Alvarez subsequently liked the post.

That gesture has been interpreted as a clear indication of his intentions during a sensitive period. The striker is understood to feel uncomfortable at Atletico after the club failed to honour what he says he was promised in February. At that time, he was told he would be allowed to leave at the end of the season for his preferred destination, provided the interested club submitted an offer that reflected his value.

Atletico are now trying only to steer Alvarez towards Arsenal. The club’s refusal to open the door to Barcelona has left the two sides locked in a dispute over both the player’s wishes and his possible destination.

There is also a significant risk for Atletico if the situation remains unresolved. Should the transfer window close without Alvarez leaving, the club could lose the opportunity to receive a substantial fee for him. Alternatively, he could stay in Madrid without the necessary motivation and fail to deliver the performances Atletico expect.

Barcelona are monitoring developments closely and remain committed to exhausting every option to sign Alvarez. He is wanted by manager Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco, who view him as the final addition to a squad strengthened and assembled to compete for every major trophy.

The Catalan club also understands the steps Alvarez is taking to pursue his ambition of playing for Barcelona. As a result, Barcelona are prepared to wait until the end of the process, even if that means risking the chance to sign another number nine.

The outcome now depends on whether Atletico soften their position, whether Arsenal enter the picture with an acceptable proposal, or whether Alvarez’s continued push for Barcelona forces a resolution on terms favoured by the player.
