Barcelona flag incident at Elche match leads to official police investigation

Spain’s National Police has opened an internal investigation into a security operation outside the Martinez Valero stadium before Elche’s La Liga match against Barcelona, after a Barcelona supporter was detained while carrying a Catalan independence flag known as the Estelada.

The inquiry follows a statement from Barcelona condemning what it described as the “disproportionate use of force” against members and supporters of the club. The club also criticised the confiscation of Estelada flags, arguing that the symbol is legal and that displaying it is a legitimate exercise of freedom of expression.

Sources at the Spanish government’s delegation in Catalonia confirmed the investigation to Spanish news agency Europa Press. They said the government delegate in Catalonia, Carlos Prieto, had spoken to Pilar Bernabe, the government delegate in the Valencia region, where Elche is based.

Bernabe subsequently confirmed that an investigation had been launched into the events “in order to take the appropriate decisions”.

Barcelona said the presence of an Estelada should not, in itself, be regarded as incitement to hatred or violence. The club’s statement expressed its regret over the police action and called for the circumstances surrounding the incident to be clarified.

The episode has since developed into a political dispute, with Catalan parties Junts and Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) asking Spain’s Ministry of the Interior to explain both the security intervention and the seizure of the flags.

Junts has formally submitted a series of questions in the Spanish parliament. The party wants to know whether the Interior Ministry has opened an internal investigation to identify the police officers involved and whether specific instructions were issued on handling the Estelada or other political symbols at sporting events.

ERC, meanwhile, has requested that Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska be called before the parliamentary Interior Committee. The party wants him to give an explanation of what it described as “unjustified police violence” against Barcelona supporters in Elche.

The incident took place around the stadium before the La Liga fixture between Elche and Barcelona. The detention of the supporter and the removal of the Estelada flags prompted Barcelona to issue its public condemnation, which was followed by the contact between the two regional government delegations and the opening of the police investigation.

The controversy came despite a convincing result for Barcelona on the pitch. The Catalan side began its 2026-27 La Liga campaign with a 5-0 victory over Elche.

Raphinha scored twice, Fermin Lopez also found the net twice, and Karim Adeyemi completed the scoring. The result provided Barcelona with a strong start to the league season, while events outside the Martinez Valero moved rapidly from a matchday security incident to a matter being examined by the police, regional authorities and Spain’s parliament.
