Manchester United weigh late decision on Noussair Mazraoui as AC Milan interest continues

Manchester United are facing a late decision over the future of Noussair Mazraoui, with AC Milan still considering a move for the Morocco international before the transfer window closes.

Mazraoui is regarded as a valuable member of the Manchester United squad because of his ability to operate in several positions. As well as playing as a full-back or wing-back, the 28-year-old can also feature on the right side of a back three.

The arrival of Ruben Amorim as Milan manager has added an important dimension to the situation. Amorim worked with Mazraoui during his time at Manchester United and is understood to have a strong appreciation of the defender’s qualities. The Portuguese coach has previously described Mazraoui as a “technical” player, highlighting his confidence in the Morocco international’s ability and technical skills.

According to CaughtOffside, Milan are assessing the possibility of signing Mazraoui as part of a wider review of their defensive options before the transfer deadline. The report says the Italian club’s position on the deal has changed several times during the summer transfer window.

Mazraoui has also moved his representation to the Panthera agency during the current transfer period. That decision could indicate a desire to leave Manchester United and move on from Old Trafford.

Amorim remains an admirer of the defender, although Milan’s interest had previously cooled after the departure of another defender being considered by the club was delayed. The Italian side’s plans have therefore been subject to change as they continue to assess their defensive targets.

Manchester United, however, are under no contractual pressure to sell. Mazraoui joined the club from Bayern Munich in August 2024 and has since demonstrated his ability to cover multiple positions across the back line.

His contract at Old Trafford runs until 2028, giving Manchester United a strong negotiating position should Milan make a formal approach. The length of the agreement means the Premier League club is not required to accept an offer simply to avoid losing the player on an expiring contract.

Mazraoui is the type of versatile defender coaches generally prefer to retain, even when a regular starting place is not guaranteed. His tactical flexibility gives Manchester United added options in several defensive roles, something that could prove particularly important over a long season affected by a congested fixture schedule, injuries and suspensions.

A move to Milan could nevertheless appeal to Mazraoui. Amorim knows his abilities well and could offer him a clearer role within the tactical system he prefers to use.

Manchester United are not expected to approve the defender’s departure for a weak offer. The club has no urgent need to part with him, while his remaining contract and ability to cover a number of defensive positions strengthen its stance.

Any agreement would therefore need to provide Manchester United with an appropriate financial return, allowing them to recruit a replacement capable of compensating for Mazraoui’s departure. Intensifying discussions around the player could continue until the transfer deadline, but the English club’s position is clear: it will not be forced into a sale on unfavourable terms.
