Bayern Munich’s Sacha Boey dilemma deepens after teenager makes Super Cup squad

Bayern Munich have intensified pressure on Sacha Boey by leaving the French defender out of their squad for the German Super Cup victory over Borussia Dortmund, reinforcing the message that he is no longer part of Vincent Kompany’s plans.

Bayern won 2-1 at Borussia Dortmund’s stadium, but Boey’s omission was the most significant indication yet that his future at the club is uncertain. The 25-year-old was not selected despite remaining under contract with the German champions until 2028.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said the decision was not simply a temporary technical choice. He made clear that the club does not intend to rely on Boey during the current season and had therefore opted for other players in the squad for the meeting with Dortmund.

Boey had previously been told, along with Joao Palhinha and Bryan Zaragoza, that he did not feature in Kompany’s plans. All three players remain contracted to Bayern, but the club has indicated that they are free to seek opportunities elsewhere.

The defender was given some chances during Bayern’s pre-season friendlies and performed well in several of those matches. However, his situation changed once competitive fixtures began, according to German newspaper Bild.

Bayern now want Boey to leave during the current summer transfer window and are encouraging him to find a new club. The Bundesliga side believes his opportunities with the first team will be extremely limited if he stays in Munich.

Eberl has increased the pressure on the players who have been excluded from the manager’s plans, warning that remaining at the club would be “very difficult and extremely complicated” for them.

The decision to select 17-year-old Mike Cardoso instead of Boey for the German Super Cup provided another clear indication of Bayern’s current position. Cardoso was included in the squad for the match, while the more experienced Boey was left out.

There has yet to be a decisive breakthrough in negotiations over Boey’s departure, with the summer transfer window approaching its conclusion. Reports suggest the defender’s market value is about 10m euros.

Boey joined Bayern with his long-term contract still in place, but the club’s stance has now made his position increasingly difficult. Bayern are determined not to depend on him this season and want to resolve his future before the transfer window closes.

The Super Cup omission therefore represents more than one missed match for Boey. It is the latest public signal that Bayern are preparing to move on from the Frenchman, even though an agreement over his next club has not yet been reached.
