Newcastle United agree £50m deal with Manchester City for Nico Gonzalez

Newcastle United have agreed a deal with Manchester City to sign midfielder Nico Gonzalez during the current summer transfer window, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

Manchester City have accepted Newcastle United’s latest offer for Gonzalez, with the proposed package worth £47m plus a further £3m in potential add-ons. The 23-year-old is expected to undergo a medical before the transfer is officially announced in the coming hours.

Gonzalez began his football development in Barcelona’s youth system before moving to Valencia on loan. He later joined Porto on a permanent basis in the summer of 2023 and spent one-and-a-half seasons with the Portuguese club.

Manchester City signed Gonzalez in January 2025. Since arriving at the club, he has made 59 appearances and scored four goals.

The midfielder was named as a substitute for Manchester City’s Community Shield match against Arsenal, playing for 11 minutes after coming off the bench. He was also among the substitutes for the club’s opening-round fixture against Bournemouth and did not play.

Manchester City began their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth. Newcastle United, meanwhile, drew 2-2 with Liverpool.

The agreement with Manchester City moves Gonzalez closer to a return to regular first-team football elsewhere, although the transfer remains subject to the completion of his medical and the formal announcement by the clubs.
