Vinicius Junior criticised by Santi Canizares after Real Madrid’s opening win

Santi Canizares has launched a fierce attack on Vinicius Junior, claiming “nobody wants a player like that” after the Real Madrid forward was accused of diving during the club’s 2-1 victory over Espanyol.

The comments came after Real Madrid’s first competitive match of the season, in which Vinicius became the focus of controversy following two incidents inside the penalty area. The 25-year-old was accused of going to ground in search of fouls that had not occurred, provoking an angry reaction from Espanyol and sparking a debate on social media.

Canizares, a former Real Madrid goalkeeper who now works as a football pundit, addressed the issue on Spanish radio station COPE. He questioned both Vinicius’ conduct and his value to the club, despite the Brazil international having recently extended his contract with Real Madrid until 2032.

“There was a big debate this summer. He had one year left on his contract, and the choice was either to sell him or keep him,” Canizares said.

“The question is what he contributes in football compared with what he takes from us. Do you know what was happening? Nobody wanted him.”

The former Spain international then delivered an even stronger assessment of the forward’s position in the transfer market.

“Nobody wants a player like that in their club. I don’t think he received any offers,” Canizares added.

“Real Madrid were obliged to renew his contract, because clearly no team had contacted him or his agent. Nobody wants a player with those characteristics… Well, perhaps a smaller team such as Newcastle, who would be extremely happy.”

Canizares’ remarks quickly triggered a strong response among Real Madrid supporters. Some fans agreed with his assessment and viewed the comments as a blunt reflection of the criticism that has repeatedly surrounded Vinicius’ behaviour on the pitch.

Others considered the attack excessive and argued that it unfairly targeted one of the most important players in Real Madrid’s long-term plans. The club’s decision to secure Vinicius’ future through 2032 underlines the importance placed on him as part of its sporting project.

The dispute follows a familiar pattern for Vinicius, who has often been at the centre of arguments over his conduct, reactions and treatment during matches. His role in Real Madrid’s opening victory ensured that the controversy surrounding him returned immediately at the start of the new campaign.
