Mohamed Shaaban joins select group after saving two penalties for Al Qanah
Mohamed Shaaban became the latest goalkeeper to save two penalties in a single Egyptian Premier League match after helping Al Qanah defeat Ceramica Cleopatra in the opening round of the 2026-27 season.
Shaaban was named Man of the Match after denying two spot-kicks during Al Qanah’s victory, making him the 12th goalkeeper credited with achieving the feat in the history of the Egyptian Premier League.
The 31-year-old first kept out Amr Qalawa’s penalty in the ninth minute. The attempt was followed by a goal from Mohamed Reda “Bobo”.
Shaaban then saved a penalty taken by Bobo in the 61st minute, completing an achievement previously managed by only 11 goalkeepers in the competition.
The goalkeepers to have saved two penalties in one Egyptian Premier League match are:
– Aldo Stella (1958-59) – Zamalek v El Terasanah – Adel Heikal (1960-61) – Al Ahly v Ittihad of Suez – Youssef Taher (1996-97) – Al Ittihad v Osman Ittihad – Mohamed El-Akkabawy (2005-06) – Arab Contractors v Ghazl El Mahalla – Mahmoud El-Sayed (2012-13) – Al Ittihad v Petrojet – Sherif Ekramy (2013-14) – Al Ahly v Petrojet – Ali Farag (2016-17) – Petrojet v El Dakhleya – Emad El-Sayed (2016-17) – Tala’ea El Gaish v Zamalek – Mohamed Mostafa (2017-18) – Al Nasr v Misr Lel Makkasa – Emad El-Sayed (2019-20) – Al Ittihad v Haras El Hodoud – Mohamed Awad (2020-21) – Zamalek v Al Masry – Reda El-Sayed (2024-25) – ENPPI v Ismaily – Mohamed Shaaban (2026-27) – Al Qanah v Ceramica Cleopatra
Emad El-Sayed, who is currently goalkeeper for Tala’ea El Gaish, is the only player on the list to have saved two penalties in a match on two separate occasions.
Shaaban joined Al Qanah as a free agent after leaving Tala’ea El Gaish. The match against Ceramica Cleopatra also marked the first time he had saved a penalty during his Egyptian Premier League career.
His performance played a major part in Al Qanah securing their first victory since returning to the Egyptian Premier League. The two penalty saves ensured Shaaban joined a distinguished group in the competition’s history while also earning individual recognition for his contribution to the result.
Al Qanah’s win came in the opening round of the league campaign, with Shaaban’s interventions proving decisive during a match in which he prevented both of Ceramica Cleopatra’s penalties from being converted.
