Liverpool snatch late point after dramatic comeback against Newcastle United

Liverpool salvaged a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle United after Dominik Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time at St James’ Park.

The Premier League match, played on Sunday as part of the opening round of fixtures, appeared to be heading Newcastle’s way until Liverpool were awarded a late spot-kick. Szoboszlai kept his composure to level the score and deny the home side victory.

Newcastle made the stronger start and took the lead in the fifth minute through Anthony Elanga. The early goal gave the hosts an advantage at St James’ Park and put Liverpool on the back foot at the beginning of the contest.

Newcastle appeared set to hold on for all three points, but Liverpool continued to search for an equaliser. The decisive moment came in the 90th minute plus nine, when Liverpool were awarded a penalty.

Szoboszlai stepped up and converted the spot-kick, completing Liverpool’s late recovery and securing a share of the points. The equaliser arrived deep into added time, leaving Newcastle without the victory they had been close to claiming.

The result meant both teams began their Premier League campaigns with one point. Newcastle United and Liverpool occupy ninth and 10th place respectively in the league table.

For Newcastle, the match represented a missed opportunity after twice taking the lead, first through Elanga and later through Willock. Liverpool, meanwhile, had to recover from behind on two occasions before finding the decisive moment at the end of the contest.

The match therefore finished with the score level at 2-2, after a sequence that saw Newcastle strike early, Liverpool equalise in the second half, the hosts move ahead again and the visitors respond with a penalty in the final moments.
