Junior Dion gives Golden Arrows first-leg lead over Mamelodi Sundowns in MTN8 semi-final
Mamelodi Sundowns must overturn a 1-0 deficit in the MTN8 semi-final after Junior Dion gave Lamontville Golden Arrows victory in the first leg at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
Dion’s 38th-minute goal secured a valuable advantage for Abafana Besthende before next weekend’s return match in Umlazi. The tie will decide which side meets either Orlando Pirates or Sekhukhune United in the final.
Golden Arrows punish Sundowns lapse
Sundowns controlled possession for extended periods but struggled to create clear-cut chances against a disciplined Golden Arrows defence. The visitors, meanwhile, remained a threat whenever they won the ball and broke forward.
Miguel Cardoso made several changes to his starting XI, giving opportunities to players who had not featured regularly during the opening weeks of the season. The Brazilians showed some attacking promise in the first half, but their reshaped defence was undone by one lapse in concentration.
Golden Arrows needed only one clear opening to take the lead.
In the 38th minute, right-back Khulekani Shezi recognised Dion’s run behind the Sundowns defence and played a through ball into his path. The striker raced into the penalty area before calmly placing his shot beyond the advancing Ricardo Goss.
Dion, who ended last season as the leading scorer in the Betway Premiership, took his only clear opportunity of the opening period and made it count.
The goal gave Pitso Dladla’s side a lead they were determined to preserve before half-time.
Cardoso responded during the interval by bringing on two of his more established attacking players, Bryan Lunga and Tashreeq Matthews, in an effort to revive Sundowns’ challenge.
The substitutions added greater attacking quality to the home side, but they did not fundamentally alter the pattern of the match. Sundowns continued to dominate possession and forced Golden Arrows to defend deeper, while Dladla’s team stayed compact and looked for opportunities in the space behind the advancing Brazilians.
As the second half progressed, Golden Arrows appeared increasingly comfortable protecting their advantage. Sundowns found it difficult to produce the final pass required to break through the visitors’ defensive shape.
Despite their control of the ball, the reigning African champions were unable to find an equaliser.
Golden Arrows’ organisation and discipline eventually proved decisive, leaving Sundowns with a demanding task in the second leg. The Brazilians will travel to Umlazi next weekend knowing they need at least two goals to guarantee their place in the MTN8 final.
For Golden Arrows, the victory and clean sheet provide a strong platform as they attempt to complete a significant upset against the reigning African champions.
