Atlanta secure Breel Embolo as MLS move from Stade Rennais is completed
Swiss-Cameroonian forward Breel Embolo has joined Atlanta from Stade Rennais for €15.41m, completing a major move to Major League Soccer. The 29-year-old centre-forward has signed a contract with Atlanta running until 30 June 2030.
Embolo moves to the United States after one season with Rennes, having joined the French club from Monaco on 1 September 2025 in a €13m transfer. His latest switch represents another significant deal in a career that has taken him through France, Monaco, Germany and Switzerland.
The striker arrives in Atlanta after featuring prominently for Switzerland at the 2026 World Cup. He appeared in all six of his side’s possible matches, scoring twice and providing two assists. Embolo started every game and played 84% of the available minutes, contributing to 29% of Switzerland’s goals during the tournament.
He also scored twice in three Coupe de France appearances during the 2025-26 campaign. Embolo’s record in that competition amounted to a goal every 85 minutes across 170 minutes on the pitch.
Born in Yaounde, Cameroon, Embolo developed in Switzerland and began his senior career with FC Basel after progressing through the club’s youth system. He won three Swiss league titles with Basel between 2013-14 and 2015-16, and was named the competition’s best young player in 2015.
His performances in Switzerland earned him a move to Schalke in July 2016 for €26.5m. Embolo later spent three seasons with Borussia Monchengladbach before joining Monaco in 2022 for €12.5m. He subsequently moved to Rennes before making his latest transfer across the Atlantic.
A right-footed striker standing 1.84m tall, Embolo now begins a new chapter with Atlanta after completing his move from Rennes on 23 August 2026.
