Liverpool start post-Salah era with Rio Ngumoha on wing against Newcastle
Liverpool have named their first Premier League starting XI since Mohamed Salah’s departure, with Rio Ngumoha selected on the wing and new signing Jeremy Jacquet starting in defence against Newcastle United.
The line-up was confirmed by Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola before the opening match of the new season. It marks the beginning of a new chapter for the club following Salah’s move to Turkish side Trabzonspor at the end of last season.
Ngumoha takes up the wide attacking role previously associated with Salah, while Argentina international Alexis Mac Allister begins the game on the substitutes’ bench.
Jacquet, one of Liverpool’s new arrivals, makes his first start in the back four alongside captain Virgil van Dijk. He is joined in defence by Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.
Liverpool will also field a midfield featuring Dominik Szoboszlai, Florian Wirtz and Ryan Gravenberch, with Alexander Isak leading the attack.
The full Liverpool starting line-up is:
Goalkeeper: Alisson Becker
Defenders: Milos Kerkez, Virgil van Dijk, Jeremy Jacquet, Jeremie Frimpong
Midfielders: Dominik Szoboszlai, Florian Wirtz, Ryan Gravenberch
Forwards: Rio Ngumoha, Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo
The match against Newcastle United will take place at 18:30 at St James’ Park, Newcastle’s home stadium.
It is the first official Liverpool line-up in the Premier League since Salah ended his spell with the club and moved to Trabzonspor. His departure leaves Ngumoha to begin this fixture in the wide position, while the team’s attacking line is completed by Isak and Cody Gakpo.
The inclusion of Jacquet alongside Van Dijk is another notable feature of the selection, with the newcomer given a starting opportunity in the centre of the defence. Wirtz is also included in midfield, while Mac Allister will be available among the substitutes.
