Golden Arrows coach Pitso Dladla says his side must be more aggressive in front of goal if they are to complete the job against Mamelodi Sundowns and reach the MTN8 final.

Arrows claimed a 1-0 victory away from home at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in the first leg of their semi-final, putting them in a strong position ahead of the return fixture.

Junior Dion scored the decisive goal in the first half before Arrows defended their advantage for the remainder of the match.

The result continued the defensive discipline Arrows showed in their quarter-final victory over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.

Arrows hold advantage over Sundowns

Dladla acknowledged that his team had to withstand periods of pressure against the reigning African champions.

Arrows also had opportunities to extend their lead, particularly on the counter-attack, but were unable to add a second goal.

“We knew there would be moments where we’d suffer, we had many counter attacks that we could have scored,” he said.

The Arrows coach admitted that Sundowns forced his team into a deeper defensive position during the contest.

“It was scary, the game forced us back a lot, but we managed to survived. Remember the nature of the tournament, the semis has two legs.”

Despite the pressure, Arrows held on to their advantage and will now return home with a narrow lead to protect.

Dladla demands attacking improvement

The coach believes the result gives his team an important advantage but insists the tie is far from settled.

With the second leg scheduled for King Zwelithini Stadium next weekend, Dladla wants his players to approach the match with greater attacking intent.

“We have an away goal advantage, but we need to be more aggressive, score first or score, we will get a big chance to win [and go to the final].”

The message from the Arrows coach is clear: defending the first-leg lead alone will not be enough.

Arrows will need to find a way to threaten Sundowns while maintaining the defensive organisation that helped them secure the victory in Pretoria.

One step from the MTN8 final

The 1-0 win gives Arrows a significant opportunity to reach the final of the domestic cup competition.

Their performance in the opening leg was built around a combination of defensive structure and the ability to take advantage of an important scoring opportunity.

Dion’s first-half strike ultimately separated the teams, while Arrows’ defensive effort prevented Sundowns from finding an equaliser.

The second leg will now determine which side advances.

Sundowns must overturn deficit

Sundowns face the task of overturning the one-goal deficit when the teams meet again at King Zwelithini Stadium.

For Arrows, the challenge is to protect their advantage without becoming overly defensive.

Dladla’s comments suggest that his team will be looking for a more positive approach, particularly when opportunities arise to attack.

The first-leg victory has put Arrows within touching distance of the MTN8 final, but their coach knows the job remains unfinished.

A disciplined performance combined with greater efficiency in attack could be enough to take them through.

For now, Arrows have the advantage, but Sundowns still have 90 minutes to change the outcome of the tie.
