Hull City stun Manchester United 2-0 in Premier League return

Hull City marked their return to the Premier League after a nine-year absence with a deserved 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Saturday, bringing Michael Carrick’s revitalised side back down to earth after the optimism generated by their strong finish last season.

The newly promoted club made the more positive start at the MKM Stadium and took the lead after 17 minutes. Semi Ajayi reacted quickest to a loose ball and converted the rebound after Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens had parried Oli McBurnie’s effort from a corner.

Hull remained dangerous from set-pieces and doubled their advantage before half-time. Regan Slater delivered a curling free-kick into the penalty area seven minutes before the interval, where Nobel Mendy climbed above the defence to head past Lammens and send the home supporters into celebrations.

Manchester United had no convincing response to Hull’s intensity and organisation. The visitors had never previously lost to a newly promoted side in a season opener, but struggled to create meaningful opportunities as the hosts’ defence protected its lead with relative comfort.

Marcus Rashford made his first Manchester United appearance since December 2024 when he came on as a second-half substitute. He provided brief signs of attacking threat, but those moments did not lead to a sustained United revival as Carrick’s team failed to establish control of the match.

United had arrived in Yorkshire with expectations raised by their progress under Carrick last season. The former Manchester United midfielder replaced Ruben Amorim in January and helped restore confidence to a squad that had been short of belief, guiding the club to a third-place finish.

Hull, however, dictated the contest for long periods and limited United to a small number of clear chances. Their advantage was never seriously threatened until the 78th minute, when Bryan Mbeumo found space in a central position.

Mbeumo’s effort appeared to offer United a route back into the game, but Konstantinos Tzolakis kept it out. The goalkeeper otherwise had a quiet afternoon, with Hull’s disciplined defensive display ensuring Manchester United were unable to build enough pressure for a comeback.

The result gives Hull an immediate statement on their Premier League return, while Manchester United’s opening-day defeat cuts across the confidence surrounding Carrick’s team following last season’s revival.
