Spalding United bring in Birmingham U21 winger Zaid Betteka on free transfer
Algerian-English winger Zaid Betteka has joined Spalding United from Birmingham U21 on a free transfer, giving the National League North club a new attacking option for the 2026-27 season.
Betteka, 19, completed the move on 21 August 2026 and has signed a contract with Spalding United until 30 June 2027. The left winger becomes part of a squad competing in the National League North after leaving Birmingham’s development set-up in Premier League 2.
The right-footed attacker spent the previous two seasons with Birmingham U21, having moved up from Birmingham U18 on 1 July 2024. His switch to Spalding represents a change in level and environment as he moves from under-21 football to a senior club competing in the National League North.
Betteka is listed at 1.80m and operates primarily from the left side of the attack. His ability to play on the wing with his right foot provides Spalding with a wide attacking option as the club builds its squad for the new campaign.
The teenager has yet to make a competitive appearance for Spalding United. He was not involved in the club’s opening National League Cup fixture of the 2026-27 season, meaning his first appearance for the side remains to come.
Betteka’s dual nationality adds an international dimension to his profile, with Algeria and England recorded as his nationalities. His move also ends his time with Birmingham U21, where he followed the club’s youth structure from the under-18 side into the under-21 team.
Spalding United have completed the free transfer, with Betteka’s agreement running through to June 2027.
