Danish FA calls for credible alternative to Infantino at 2027 FIFA election

The Danish Football Association (DBU) says it will not support Gianni Infantino in the next FIFA presidential election, arguing that his leadership has created a “fundamental crisis of confidence” in the organisation.

The election is scheduled to take place on 18 March 2027 at the 77th FIFA Congress in Rabat, Morocco.

The DBU said it did not back Infantino at the previous election in 2022 and would maintain that position at the next vote. It also criticised a proposal linked to Infantino’s project to privatise part of the World Cup, which was subsequently abandoned.

According to the Danish association, the attempt caused a “fundamental crisis of confidence in the leadership of FIFA”. It added that later apologies and the withdrawal of the proposal had not changed its view.

“The DBU, in cooperation with UEFA and our international colleagues, will work to ensure that the member associations have a real choice in the 2027 presidential election,” the organisation said.

It called for “a credible alternative capable of uniting FIFA across the confederations and rebuilding the trust that has been broken”.

The deadline for submitting nominations for the FIFA presidency is 18 November. However, no rival candidate to Infantino has emerged so far, according to French newspaper L’Equipe.

The DBU said its position was clear and that it wanted to “see a new president at the head of FIFA”.

Its announcement also aligned the Danish association with UEFA’s position on the possibility of boycotting future FIFA competitions if the world governing body fails to provide what it described as the necessary guarantees.

Those guarantees would have to prevent FIFA competitions from being opened to private-sector investors, the DBU said.

The Danish association’s decision represents a direct challenge to Infantino ahead of the 2027 vote, although the current FIFA president is, at present, the only candidate identified in connection with the election.

The DBU’s criticism centres on confidence in FIFA’s leadership and the handling of the abandoned proposal, rather than on a declared alternative candidate. Its cooperation with UEFA and other international associations is intended to help produce a meaningful choice for member associations before nominations close.

The next election will therefore determine whether Infantino remains in office or whether a new candidate can build sufficient support across FIFA’s confederations. For now, the Danish FA has made clear that it will not contribute to another Infantino mandate and is seeking a different direction for the organisation.
