Durban City weigh deal for former Magesi FC defender Tshegofatso Nyama
Durban City FC are assessing former Magesi FC player Tshegofatso Nyama ahead of a possible move to the elite division, with the versatile defender expected to feature in a friendly on Saturday.
Nyama, who is most comfortable at left-back, has been training with Durban City as he attempts to earn a contract with the club. His performances so far are understood to have been encouraging, and a decision on his future is likely to be made after the weekend fixture.
“He’s been here, and he’s been looking good. Even tomorrow (Saturday), we are playing a friendly, and he is going to feature,” said a source.
“The club is likely to make their decision after that, and if he continues in this fashion, he will most likely be signed.”
A move to Durban City would give Nyama an opportunity to return to the top flight after a difficult spell with Magesi FC. The player joined the Limpopo-based club in February, but his time there produced little to celebrate as Magesi endured a poor season and were relegated to the second tier.
Nyama has continued to attract interest despite Magesi’s relegation. His ability to operate in several positions, allied to his preference for left-back, has helped maintain his appeal as he looks for his next club.
The player began his career at TS Galaxy in 2008, where he made a strong impression. His early performances reportedly attracted the attention of Orlando Pirates, who were believed to be interested in taking him to the bright lights of Johannesburg.
Cape Town City ultimately won the race to sign Nyama three years ago. He remained with the club before completing his move to Magesi FC earlier this year.
Durban City are now considering whether Nyama can fill the vacancy at left-back created by the departure of Terrence Mashego. Mashego was the club’s first-choice player in that position last season while on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, but he has since moved to Stellenbosch FC on another loan deal.
The friendly on Saturday will therefore provide Nyama with an important opportunity to strengthen his case. Should he maintain the level shown during his training spell, Durban City are expected to make a decision on whether to offer him a deal.
For Nyama, a successful assessment would represent a route back into the elite division after Magesi’s disappointing campaign. For Durban City, the trial gives them the chance to evaluate an experienced and adaptable option as they seek to replace Mashego at left-back.
