Gomora United sign Namibian midfielder Vevangapi Mbuende ahead of new season

Gomora United have agreed to sign 19-year-old Namibian midfielder Vevangapi Mbuende, known as ‘Okapi’, as the Motsepe Foundation Championship club continues to strengthen its squad before the new season.

Mbuende, who can play in both defensive and attacking midfield roles, is expected to join Gomora from Namibian club African Stars once he completes the final administrative requirements for the move.

Gomora chairman Joe Seanego said the club was waiting for the player to complete his police clearance before returning to South Africa to finalise the transfer.

“The level of signings this season makes it clear, everyone is chasing promotion, and no one wants to face relegation,” Seanego told KickOff.

“We’re just waiting on the final signature of a talented 19-year-old Namibian international. He’s currently finalising his police clearance and will soon be back here. He’s from African Stars in Namibia.”

The arrival of Mbuende adds to an increasingly competitive promotion race in the second tier, with Seanego suggesting that clubs across the Motsepe Foundation Championship have made ambitious recruitment moves during the close season.

Mbuende signed his first professional contract with the University of Namibia in early 2024. He later moved to African Stars and attracted fresh attention last month when he travelled to Gomora for an assessment.

That opportunity came after an unsuccessful trial with Stellenbosch FC.

Seanego praised the teenager’s ability and explained why he has earned the nickname ‘Okapi’, while also pointing to his experience at international level.

“This young player is exceptional. We call him ‘Okapi’ because of his agility and attacking prowess. He’s a central midfielder who can also drop back defensively, and he’s already represented his national team. Watch out for this exciting talent!” the club boss added with a smile.

Mbuende’s versatility is expected to provide Gomora with another option in central midfield, where he can contribute both in possession and when the team is required to defend.

Gomora begin their campaign away from home against Hungry Lions on Saturday. The match will be played at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00.

The signing is the latest indication of Gomora’s intent as they prepare for a season in which promotion ambitions are being matched by clubs throughout the division.
